...former WAFL fans now follow the first WA team, the Eagles, giving them a huge financial advantage, similar to Adelaides position over Port (although Adelaides relative strengths have not been managed as well). Any more questions? @timthegrate

...eventually became the big dog in the Australian Rules environment and began to poach the besplayers from the SA and WA competitions. By the 1980's it was this poaching and clubs paying more than they could afford in an uneven competitive marketplace that was bringing the VFL to its knees and led to the obvious need to have 1 national comp under one umbrella org called the AFL. WA is a state of 2.5million people and the 7 year head start for the Eagles over the Dockers meant at least 70% of ..

Craig, love your show but you do need an Australian Rules history lesson. This episode talks about a Victorian (VFL) game and how it expanded to the rest of the nation in th 1980's. Only you are at least 100 years out with that description. Western and South Australian states had strong competitions from the 1880's with an eventual 8 team league in WA and a 10 team league in SA all but settled by the 1930!s. The VFL due to that states relative population (boosted by the 1850"s gold rush) ...

Another great episode Craig, I am enjoying the research that you have done. I am learning so much. You mentioned the State of Origin matches. These were played annually but the coaches were a little reluctant to allow some of their good players to take part for fear of injury. These games were played during a “bye” week and proved difficult as the chosen players did not have the break. They have been discussing this on radio here and the consensus is that if it was played say 4 yearly or when there was an important event as the bushfire cause is proving, this could be an answer to the problem and enlist coaches support. The original “state of origin “ was against the WA, SA and Victoria. Now it’s Victoria against the “allies” which is all the other states “clumped together” ( for want of a better term)
